Focus on Vacforms (in 1/72 scale)
Introduction
I am sometimes asked for sources of vacform kits. Most, of course, are old and long since out of production. As I am not a seller of these kits, all I can do is to suggest some sources that I know and that can be found by any internet search. I have no commercial links with any of these sources and although I can list some, I am not recommending or endorsing any of them. I am simply saying that they exist.
If anyone knows of other sources, let me know and I will add to this list.
Buyers beware
Buyers need to be aware of the condition of old vacform models.
- Canopies may be yellowed. They can not be restored, though they can be used to mould new ones from clear plastic card.
- Decals, if they exist, may be cracked or to brittle to be used.
- Moulding around edges, e.g. on a radial engine cowling, can be too thin and in need of repair.
- The plastic may have yellowed and become so brittle that it can crack when cut from the sheet.
- Some pieces may be missing, e,g., if a previous buyer began but did not complete the model.
None of these problems need deter an experienced vacform builder from completing a model (though brittle plastic can be problematic).
Model shows
There are always model kit traders at model shows. You just have to go looking to see what they have to sell. You may even be able to negotiate a price as they can find vacform kits hard to sell!
eBay
eBay usually has a list of vacform kits on sale through individuals and through independent traders. Some prices can be regarded as bargains, though bidding usually finds their real value, i.e. to the person who most wants the kit. Be prepared to be outbid within the last second of a bidding war, especially for those kits that are rare! Many others however, can still be bought for very reasonable prices.
